From November 30 to December 1, 33 teachers and students in a kindergarten in Qiongshan District, Haikou city, Hainan Province, developed vomiting and diarrhea in succession, including 31 children and 2 teachers.
It is reported that the children were taken by their parents to the hospital for treatment or rest at home after the symptoms relieved, all mild cases, no severe cases or hospitalized cases.
According to the municipal Health Commission, based on the patient’s clinical manifestations, on-site epidemiological investigation and laboratory test results, the incident was not caused by food poisoning, and the vomiting and diarrhea of the child was caused by norovirus (G2) infection.
Norovirus, formerly known as Norovirus, belongs to the caliciviridae family. The virus has the characteristics of short incubation period, rapid mutation, strong environmental resistance, diversified transmission routes and low dose of infection, so it is easy to cause transmission among people. All people are generally susceptible to the virus. The duration of immune protection from norovirus infection is short, so the same person can be repeatedly infected with the same strain or different types of norovirus.
Norovirus infection can occur all year round, with the peak norovirus epidemic season from October to March. New strains of norovirus that cause global epidemics also appear every 2-3 years.
